The article outlines a campaign that was started by Bjørn Geirr Harsson. His thought was that for the hundredth anniversary of Finland's freedom in 2017, Norway should give them Halti Mountain. This gift is located at the border of the two countries and if the plan were to go thorough it would only alter the land area of Norway by .015 square kilometers and the border would be shifted a total of 200 meters. Currently Finland is a mountain deprived country with their highest point located along a hillside. If Norway were to gift the mountain it would become Finland's new highest peak. This would not cause any distress in Norway because Halti doesn't currently have a place on the top 200 tallest peaks in Norway. The campaign moved to Facebook recently and has taken off. So far Harsson has gained support from the Norwegian Mapping Company, but no other government officials, as Harsson's letters haven't gotten a reply. If this were to be done there would be a few legal obstacles, however, the gesture would be warmly received. In general Finnish people have high regard in Norway which is why this is being discussed.
I think that this is a very generous campaign that Mr. Harsson is trying to accomplish. The gift would bring the nations closer together and create a strong alliance in the event of a war. Mr. Harsson should definably address possible difficulties in his campaign and work to refute them, including the legal side of the situation. An accomplishment of a hundred years of independence should be acknowledged in some way by Norway. The idea presented would be happily accepted by Finland while Norway would lose very little in terms of land and power.
This article ties into the culture of Norway because it shows the nations relations with Finland. By working to give Finland Mount Halti for their anniversary it show how the country views their neighbors. Norwegians share a past with Finland and this affects their current feelings toward them. In addition, it proves that the people of Norway are giving and genuinely care about their neighboring countries upcoming anniversary. This event is important to the culture of Norway because it is currently occurring and shows how the people of the nation can make a change without holding office.
