The Congo has been the center of Africa's "World War". This conflict was the government backed by Angola, Namibia, and Zimbabwe versus the rebels who had support from Rwanda and Uganda. A total of 6 million people have died due to the conflict. Its main issue has been over control of the mineral wealth that the country has. This conflict has been going on for 5 years with both economic and political issues but is not the first issue the country has had. The Congo has a long history of corruption and violence. Starting with their independence in 1960 the Congo has had many different succession attempts made and some have succeeded. Starting with a military coup in 1965 by Mobutu who ruled badly and corrupted the government. An anti-Mobutu group began to form and in 1997 this group captured the government and instated the first president Laurent Kabila who renamed the nation the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Another rebellion occurred with the same sides picked by all involved that created continual fighting and broken peace treaties. The main rebel group was lead by Tutsi General Nkunda. In 2009 he was arrested and the fighting began to die down until peace was declared in 2013.
I was not aware of the multiple wars that had gone on in the Congo or its history of violence. The fact presented in the article show that the Congo has a rough past but that they are now improving with the declaration of peace. I definitely think that there should be a democracy instated in the country and that it was the right choice to instate one when they did. The reason for the fighting seemed to be from the economic and political problems in the state and now that they're gone, for the most part, the nation can move on from their past and begin improving.
This article relates to the culture of the Congo because it show all that the country has been through and what people there have dealt with their whole lives. It helps explain why some cultural traits are in the country and ethnic groups as well. The events in the article are important to the Congo because it is their history and that is always important. Learning from the past helps improve in the future and this is what is being done in the Congo, culturally, economically, and politically.
