This article is about Ebola and its affect on a man named Daddy Hasah Kamara in Sierra Leone. Currently in the country there are 4,000 survivors of the disease. Mr. Kamara has had nine family members die from the disease. He caught the disease from his mother as it was being dispersed across the country. Now that he has been cured Kamara has tried to return to work but cannot find a job. This is a problem because he has eight children and two sisters to provide for. The outbreak of Sierra Leone began in December of 2013. At the end of the diseases course a total of 11.000 people died. Sierra Leone was officially declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization recently. There are worries of a occurrence of the disease. The most sure way to avoid catching Ebola is to avoid body contact which has been very hard for Sierra Leoneans because of their culture of affection.
This article surprised me because even though Kamara was cured of his Ebola he couldn't find a job to support his family. It's sad that so many people in Sierra Leone were so negatively affected my the disease. I knew that Ebola impacted Africa but I didn't know that it was to such a large extent. Because the family structure is different in Africa many people have more children then families in the US and their large families have a negative affect when paired with the disease. With more people in contact with a diseased person the illness spreads faster. It is really sad that it took so long for Ebola to be eradicated.
This article ties into the culture of Sierra Leone because in general they are a very affectionate culture and this is changing because of the Ebola outbreak. Due to the fact that Ebola is spread through contact with an infected person, the affectionate attitudes of the people will have changed. Some may now be scared to show their affection as much as they have in the past. This disease became a part of their culture and now that it is officially gone has left its mark and changed Sierra Leoneans.
